Free AI character chat: what each free tier gives you
Free AI character chat ranges from unlimited messages with no account to ten messages a day behind a signup. We went through the free tiers of five platforms we have reviewed and wrote down what each one hands you before it asks for money.
What free AI character chat is
You open a character someone else wrote (or one you build) and talk to it, and the platform pays for the model time in exchange for a limit. That limit is where the free tiers split. A few platforms let you in without an account and cap nothing, or very little. Most ask for an email first and then count your messages. Some keep the message count generous and lock features instead: images, voice, explicit content, or the builder for your own characters.
Message caps
The most common limit. Across our five picks the free allowance runs from 10 messages a day on Candy to no cap at all on My AI Romance.
Feature locks
Joi's free tier gives 30 messages a day with no image generation and an aggressive NSFW filter. CrushOn filters content until you pay $5.99.
Memory limits
Free memory is usually short. CrushOn's free tier keeps about 20 turns; the account-free apps keep a session and forget it when you leave.
How free AI character chat tiers differ
The headline number is the daily message cap, and it varies more than you would expect. My AI Romance has no cap and no paid tier. AIGFModel allows about 100 messages a day on most modes and about 200 in Roleplay. CrushOn gives 50, Joi 30 and Candy 10. Ten messages will show you whether you like how a character writes, though you will run out before a scene gets going.
The second difference is the account. Only two of our five picks work without one: AIGFModel's Character Chat mode and My AI Romance. The other three need an email before the first message, and that account is also where your chat history gets stored. If you want to test a platform before giving it an address, start with those two. One more app we have reviewed opens without an account but is not on this list: Love Companion AI gives guests about five messages before it hands them on to a paid partner app, which is a sample rather than a free tier.
The third is what the cap leaves out. Candy's free tier is text only with one pre-built character and three image generations a month, so you never see the builder or the voice calls that earn its 4.8. Joi's free tier has no images at all. The account-free apps hold back less: My AI Romance has nothing to sell, and AIGFModel keeps longer memory and extra companions for Premium.
How to tell a real free tier from a demo
We ask three questions. Can you finish an ordinary evening's conversation inside the daily allowance? Is the free model the same one paying users get? Does the free tier show you the feature the platform is selling? Candy fails the first and third: 10 messages and no voice or custom characters on free, which is why we call its free tier a demo even though it is the app we rate highest. CrushOn passes the first with 50 messages, but the content filter and the 20-turn memory mean free users see a different product from the $5.99 Plus tier. My AI Romance and AIGFModel pass all three for plain chat.
Five platforms for free AI character chat
Ordered by how much the free tier gives you, so Candy, our highest-rated app overall, comes last here. Scores are from our full reviews.
1. AIGFModel: the biggest library you can open without an account
AIGFModel leads because its Character Chat mode opens thousands of characters in a browser tab with no sign-up at all, and its free allowance (about 100 messages a day, about 200 in Roleplay) covers a long evening. It is an 18+ platform and its girlfriend mode sits behind an age check. In our testing it held a defined persona through adult turns. Premium adds longer memory and more companions, and the price only shows up once you are inside. It scored 4.5 in our AIGFModel review.
2. My AI Romance: no cap and nothing to buy
My AI Romance has no paid tier, so the free version is the whole product: 50 written characters, unlimited messages, and no signup, email or card. Adult chat is allowed with some guardrails. What you give up is everything beyond text. There are no images or voice, you cannot build your own character, and memory lasts for the session. We scored it 4.4.
3. CrushOn AI: a huge library, filtered until you pay
CrushOn AI lists over 1,000 user-made characters, and free accounts can browse all of them and send 50 messages a day. Free chat is filtered and memory stops at about 20 turns, so long scenes lose track early. The $5.99 Plus plan removes the filter and stretches memory to about 60 turns. Quality varies a lot because the community writes the characters; by our count about 60 percent are amateur work. We scored it 3.8.
4. Joi AI: test the builder on 30 messages a day
Joi AI is the pick if you want your own character. Its builder has 12 personality sliders and six chat styles you can switch mid-conversation, and the free tier lets you build one character and send 30 messages a day. Free has no images and a strict NSFW filter that pushed back within ten messages in our test. Premium is $9.99 and Pro $17.77. See the Joi AI review (4.3).
5. Candy AI: the best paid app with the thinnest free tier
Candy AI is our highest-rated app at 4.8, and it comes last here because the free tier is 10 text messages a day with one pre-built character. On Premium ($12.99, or $6.99 a month billed yearly) it held 18 of 20 fact callbacks over ten days and kept the same face across 50 images. Use the free tier to check the writing, then decide. Our Candy AI review has the details.

Getting the most out of a free tier
Start without an account
Open AIGFModel's Character Chat or My AI Romance first. You learn what you like in a character before any platform has your email.
Spend the cap on one scene
On a capped tier, 10 or 30 messages go further on one character and one scenario than spread across five.
Test the feature you would pay for
If the free tier hides it (Candy's voice, Joi's images), read our review of that feature before subscribing.
Pay for one month first
Annual plans are cheaper per month, but a single month tells you whether the memory holds up for your use.
Free AI character chat FAQ
What readers ask about free tiers and their limits.
Is free AI character chat really free?
On My AI Romance it is, because there is no paid tier and no message cap. Everywhere else the free tier is a limited version of a paid product: a daily message cap, a content filter, or features such as images and voice held back for subscribers.
Which free tier gives the most messages?
My AI Romance has no cap. Among the capped ones, AIGFModel allows about 100 messages a day (about 200 in Roleplay mode), CrushOn 50, Joi 30 and Candy 10.
How can I tell a real free tier from a demo?
Check whether the allowance covers a full conversation, whether free users get the same model as subscribers, and whether the free tier shows the feature the app sells. Candy's 10 text messages with one pre-built character is a demo by that test; My AI Romance and AIGFModel give you the full chat.
Can I build my own character for free?
Partly. Joi's free tier gives you one character slot in its builder, with the full builder and all six chat styles on Pro at $17.77. AIGFModel's free tier includes persona customization. My AI Romance has a fixed roster of 50, and Candy keeps custom characters for Premium.
Does a free character remember me between visits?
Rarely. The account-free apps keep context for the session only. CrushOn's free memory stops at about 20 turns. Long memory is a paid feature on most platforms, and Candy's Premium is the strongest we measured at 18 of 20 callbacks over ten days.
Are free character chats NSFW?
Mostly not on the free tier. Joi and CrushOn filter free chat, and Candy keeps explicit text for Premium. My AI Romance allows adult chat with guardrails, and AIGFModel is an 18+ platform from the start.
