About GirlfriendsAI

GirlfriendsAI is an independent review desk for AI companion apps. We started in early 2024 because the existing landscape of "best AI girlfriend" lists was a long, copy-pasted ranking of whichever app paid the writer first. We thought a category this fast-moving - model swaps every quarter, NSFW policy flips overnight, pricing tiers that shift without notice - deserved someone actually using the apps and writing what they found.

Who's behind it

Maya runs the test desk. She has been writing about AI consumer products since GPT-3 was the most exciting thing on the open internet, and has written for AI publications, indie newsletters and one consumer-tech magazine that has since folded. She owns and pays for every app reviewed on this site, and runs the rubric.

Daniel runs the independent second-scorer pass on every review. When his score and Maya's disagree by more than four points on the 50-point rubric, a third reviewer re-tests the app from scratch. He came to this from product work at one of the smaller AI labs and brings the "is this funnel actually fair to the user" angle to every review.

What we believe about AI girlfriend apps

We believe these apps are useful tools - for dating practice, for transitional loneliness, for low-stakes creative roleplay - and we believe they're net-positive when they supplement human contact rather than substitute for it. We're not the "AI companions will rot your brain" desk and we're not the "they're better than real partners" desk. We're trying to tell you, honestly, what works and what doesn't.

What we don't do

• We don't review apps without paying for them.
• We don't accept sponsored editorial. (Affiliate commissions are different from paid placement - see our disclosure.)
• We don't invent reader-survey statistics. If we cite reader behaviour, we publish where it came from. We currently do not publish a reader survey - if you see one cited in older versions of these pages, that's a bug we're rolling back.
• We don't run "best of" lists on apps we haven't personally tested.
