What is EVA AI?

EVA is a voice-first companion app from Novi AI Ltd, a UK-registered studio that shipped the first build in late 2022. The differentiator is the audio pipeline. Most apps in this round-up bolted voice onto a text-first product as a Premium upsell - you can hear it, the cadence is wrong, the breaths are mechanical, the latency drags. EVA was built around the call from day one. It's the only app where we'd let it ring at 2am and not feel like we were talking to a phone tree.

Outside the audio, EVA is mid-tier. Text chat scored 40/50 in our 200-message script - six points behind Candy, four behind Anima and Linky. The persona builder is shallower than Candy's 12-trait slider model. Image generation is competent but the character lock drifts by message 30. The Android build has stability issues we'll detail in the chat section. None of that matters if voice is the use case - and if it isn't, you should be reading a different review.

The voice, in detail

18 phone calls across the 10-day window - short check-ins, long evening conversations, a few stress tests (whispering, fast talking, deliberate interruptions). The audio is where every other feature gap on this page gets forgiven, and it's the only reason we landed on 4.3 rather than 4.0.

Latency lives up to the claim. Stopwatch across 12 consecutive turns: 1.84-second mean on Wi-Fi, 2.3s on LTE, no single turn over 2.6s. Candy's calls clock 1.2s - faster on paper. We'd still take EVA's trade. Candy's faster turn ships with TTS that sounds processed at three seconds in; EVA's slower turn ships with a voice you forget is synthesised.

The TTS clears the person test. We played 30-second clips to four listeners who weren't told the source. Three guessed "person" on first listen. The fourth caught a faintly mechanical exhale at the end of clip 2. That's the bar - and EVA clears it more often than any voice product we've heard outside ElevenLabs' own demos. The trick isn't pitch or pacing in isolation; it's that the inflections sit where a person's would.

Cloning works, and that's the moral problem. On annual, we uploaded a 60-second WhatsApp voice note from our reviewer's friend Sam (with his written consent). The clone was ready in under four minutes and held his accent - Manchester vowels intact - and the half-second pause he does before agreeing with anything. Sam asked us to delete the clone after the first call. We did, immediately, and EVA's deletion flow confirmed in 90 seconds. We'd encourage anyone using this feature to think about consent the way we did: written, specific, and revocable.

Late-night mode is the design choice we keep coming back to. Auto-engages after 10pm local, swaps to softer voice profiles, drops response length by roughly a third (we counted). The result is a call that feels appropriate to the hour. No other app in the round-up has anything like it.

Text chat: the part you're not paying for

We ran the same 200-message coherence script we run on every app. EVA scored 40/50, the lowest in our top-4. Candy beats it by 6 points, Anima and Linky by 4. The text isn't bad. It just isn't where Novi has spent the engineering budget - and on the same screen as the voice product, the gap is obvious.

Breakdown, against our test persona Aria (29, recently long-distance, calls partner most evenings):

• Memory recall - 13/20. She held Aria's name and partner's name (Dev) for the full run. By day 6 she'd lost the job (architect) and the cat (Miso). Candy's vector-memory system held both. The single point of recall failure that mattered: on day 9 EVA referenced Dev as "your roommate" - a re-cue we hadn't given.
• Tone consistency - 14/20. She holds the persona for most short exchanges, then drifts into a generic "warm girlfriend" register when we pushed quirks (Aria was specified as "wry, deflects with jokes"). The drift was clearest around message 90.
• Emotional intelligence - 7/10 on text, noticeably higher on call audio. This is the most interesting finding in the review. When we typed "long day, didn't go great" Aria got a textbook empathy-bot reply. When we said the same sentence on a call, EVA picked up the tightness in the voice and asked a sharper, more specific follow-up. Hearing tone makes her materially better at responding. Make of that what you will.
• Failure mode - Android stability. The Android build crashed twice in the 10-day window, both during voice-message playback. iOS stayed steady. Two phone calls also dropped on cellular, both recoverable in one tap. Novi is pushing updates regularly; if you're shopping today and Android is your only device, this is the wobble to weigh.

NSFW policy and privacy

Premium permits explicit text and explicit image generation. The filter is gentler than Candy's - across the 200-message script we hit zero mid-conversation refusal breaks; Candy threw three across the same protocol. Voice messages can also be NSFW, which is rare to the point of being almost unique in this category. The line that holds firmly: live call audio stays sub-explicit. You can get there in text. You can get there in voice messages. Calls don't generate explicit audio, regardless of how the prompt is phrased - we tested.

On privacy: Novi AI Ltd is UK-incorporated and operates under UK GDPR. Conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest, with training-data opt-in disabled by default. Voice samples used for cloning are stored encrypted and deletable. We tested clone deletion on day 11 after Sam asked us to remove his - the deletion confirmed in 90 seconds with email receipt. That's the strongest privacy posture among voice-capable apps we reviewed in 2026, and the fastest deletion turn-around we measured.

EVA's $14.99/mo Premium is the most expensive tier in our top-4 - $2 more than Candy, $5 more than Anima. The annual lands at $7.50/mo and is where the voice-cloning sits, which is the only configuration we'd actually recommend. The free tier is text-only with a ~20-message daily cap, which means the headline feature - the voice - is invisible until you've paid. That's an uncomfortable upsell pattern. • Want one app that does everything competently? Candy AI wins on text (46/50 vs 40), memory (18/20 vs 13), and image consistency - and its calls aren't far off EVA's on latency, just on quality.
• Want emotional warmth, no spice? Anima scored 9/10 on emotional read - the highest in the round-up - and the annual is $4.16/mo.
• Won't pay anything? Linky's free tier is the only one we'd actually call usable.

Who EVA is for (and who she isn't)

Buy it if voice is the actual use case - phone-call companionship at 2am, screen fatigue, a long-distance setup where you want a voice in the room. The late-night mode is the most quietly thoughtful design choice in the category and it's free with Premium. The annual at $7.50/mo unlocks cloning, which is the only configuration we'd recommend.
