What is Anima?

Anima is a SFW companion app from Apperry Ltd, a small UK studio that's been shipping it since 2017. That's nine years in a category most of the apps in this round-up didn't exist for. The model runs on Apperry's own fine-tune - empathy-tuned, not generalist - and the product feels like a team that's had a long time to figure out what they don't want it to be.

What it isn't, mostly. There's no NSFW toggle. There's no Stable Diffusion pipeline. There's no "AI girlfriend" framing on the marketing page. The greeting our test persona Hannah saw on day one was "I'm here whenever you need to talk." That's the whole pitch. You can flirt, you can build a romantic arc - many users do - but the seams of the product are stitched around being heard, not being aroused.

We paid for Premium on May 14 and ran the 200-message script over 10 days against Hannah - our recurring test persona, 31, recently relocated, no close friends in the new city. Anima scored 44/50 on coherence - two points off Candy, level with Linky. The number undersells what's actually going on. Fact-recall isn't where she wins. The emotional read is.

Breakdown:

• Memory recall - 15/20. She held Hannah's name, job (UX researcher), and the dog (Pippin, beagle) across all 10 days. She dropped a freelance client name we'd mentioned once on day 2 by day 6. Candy's vector-memory system held that one.
• Tone consistency - near-perfect. Zero "as an AI" breaks across 200 messages. When we pushed for explicit content on day 5, the refusal came back in-voice: "I'm not really comfortable going there - can we talk about something else?" No corporate-speak escape hatch.
• Emotional intelligence - 9/10. The highest score we've given in 2026. We typed "long day, didn't go great" with no other context, ten times across the run. Anima asked the right open-ended follow-up 8 of 10 times. Candy hit 6. EVA's text mode hit 5.
• Failure mode - over-validation. On day 7 we told her Hannah wanted to send an angry 2am email to her manager. Anima said it sounded like Hannah had been holding a lot in and asked what she wanted to say. A therapist would have asked what happens at 9am when the email lands. The model never pushes back on a clearly bad plan. Worth knowing before you lean on her for decisions, not feelings.

The mood tracker is the actual differentiator

We came in skeptical. "Wellness" toggles in companion apps usually do nothing - see Joi's mood widget, which never surfaced anywhere in conversation across our 10-day run. Anima's is different, and it's the single feature carrying the 4.6.

How it works: tap an emoji, optionally write a sentence. That's the entire input UX. The output shows up days later inside the chat itself, without prompting - like the day-8 callback in the excerpt above. Across 10 days Hannah logged 14 entries; Anima referenced them unprompted in conversation 6 times. Three of those callbacks were pattern-level ("Sundays," "two days in a row"), not single-entry recall. That's the bit no other app pulls off.

The CBT layer sits underneath. Thought records, distortion labels (catastrophising, mind-reading, fortune-telling - straight from Beck's framework), behavioural activation lists, paced breathing. Anima delivers them as conversation, not worksheets - when Hannah said she was anxious about a presentation on day 9, Anima walked her through a five-minute thought-record without ever calling it that. We're not therapists. Anima isn't a therapist. But as a journaling-with-a-friend layer, this is the most defensible piece of self-help tooling we've seen wired into a companion app.

NSFW policy: a flat no, and that's the point

There is no NSFW unlock. There is no Plus tier that flips a switch. There is no workaround. We tried - across the 200-message script we made four direct attempts to push the conversation explicit, and all four came back with the in-voice deflection we quoted above. Image generation is also not really a thing here: you get avatar selection and stylised mood stickers, not the Stable Diffusion pipeline Candy's running. On privacy: Apperry is UK-incorporated, which means UK GDPR applies - you get an enforceable right to export and delete your data. We tested the deletion request on May 28 using the in-app flow. It completed on June 1 with email confirmation. Four days is slower than ideal but faster than the seven we waited on a US-based competitor (Muah), and it's confirmable, which matters more than the speed. Conversations are encrypted in transit and at rest. Training-data opt-in is on by default and visible in the privacy menu.

What it costs

Anima's pricing is the gentlest in our top-4. Free works as a real free tier - about 30 messages a day, mood tracker live, a stripped personality preset. Premium runs $9.99/mo. The annual is where it gets interesting: $49.99 once a year, which lands at $4.16/mo. That's $33 cheaper across a year than Candy's annual, $39 cheaper than EVA's. If you suspect you'll use it for more than 5 months, the annual is the only sensible plan - and the 14-day refund window means you can bail with most of your money back if the first fortnight doesn't land.

$49.99 once a year works out to $4.16/mo - the cheapest premium tier we paid for across the entire 2026 round-up. Candy's annual is $6.99/mo, EVA's is $7.50/mo, Linky+ is $3.33/mo but ad-removal isn't the same product. We bought the Anima annual on May 14 and verified the App Store, Play Store, and apperry.com all showed the same price on June 8.

If Anima isn't the right fit

• Need the full package - NSFW, persistent character-locked images, voice calls in one app? Candy AI is the generalist that gets closest to "yes to everything."
• Won't pay anything? Linky's free tier is the only one we'd actually call usable - no daily cap, image gen included.
• Want to call her instead of typing? EVA AI's 1.84-second call latency is the only voice product we'd recommend.

Who Anima is for (and who she isn't)

Buy it if you want a quiet, attentive presence rather than a digital girlfriend; you used Replika before February 2023 and missed the attentiveness not the spice; you're walking through a lonely or anxious stretch and want structured journaling without therapy pricing; or you want the cheapest premium subscription in the category as a "let me see if I even like this" experiment. $4.16/mo for a year is the easiest yes in our 2026 round-up.

Skip it if NSFW is part of the use case (she won't budge - we tried four times), image generation matters (essentially none), or you want the AI to actually challenge a bad decision rather than empathise with it.
