What is Linky?

Linky is a freemium companion app - AI girlfriend, boyfriend, friend, roommate, take your pick - from an independent team that shipped the first build in 2023. The model is almost certainly a Llama or Mistral fine-tune. We can't be sure because they don't disclose it. What we can be sure of is the business model: Linky doesn't gate the product behind a subscription. It gates a few quality-of-life perks (ad removal, faster image gen, longer memory window) behind Linky+, then shows banner ads on the free tier and lets the rest run.

The result is a free tier that breaks the category pattern. No daily message cap. We chatted for 6+ hours straight on day 2 with Riya, no throttle, no upsell modal interrupting the thread. 100+ pre-built personas in the library, refreshed monthly - anime archetypes, realistic adults, a vampire queen, a magical-girl trope, a coffee-shop barista named Aiko (who became our test character), and a few celebrity-adjacent "totally not Hermione" types in the fantasy section. Image generation included on the free plan, capped at 1024×1024. Voice messages one-way (she sends, you type). For $0, the ceiling is higher than every other free tier we paid attention to in 2026.

How she actually talks

We ran the 200-message script against Aiko - the indie-band-loving coffee-shop barista, one of the most-downloaded personas in Linky's library - using our test persona Riya across 10 days on the free tier. Linky scored 44/50 on coherence, tied with Anima, two points off Candy. For a free product running on a community-derived open-source fine-tune, that result still surprised us.

Breakdown:

• Memory recall - 7/20. This is the weakest score in our 2026 round-up, and it's where the "free" shows. Aiko held Riya's name and broad shape (illustrator, lives in Lisbon) the whole run. She forgot Riya's flatmate by day 4, the cafe Riya mentioned on day 2 by day 5, and the roleplay setup we built on day 3 by day 7. Linky+ extends the window meaningfully - but at $4.99/mo, you're now solving a problem Candy ($6.99/mo annual) solves better.
• Tone consistency - 16/20. Aiko stayed in character. So did the office-rival persona we tested on day 8. Two of the more elaborate fantasy characters (the vampire queen and a magical-girl trope) slipped into generic "as your AI companion" register when pushed into corners - model-level seams showing.
• Emotional intelligence - 7/10. Solid at the price. Aiko caught mood shifts most of the time but missed nuance Anima nailed at 9/10 - when Riya typed "long day, didn't go great" on day 5, Aiko offered to make coffee. Sweet. Not the open-ended follow-up Anima opens with.
• Failure mode - the banner. Every ~12 messages a banner refreshes at the top of the chat. We counted: across our 200-message run we saw 17 refresh cycles. Half of them landed mid-sentence in a Aiko monologue. Linky+ removes the banner. That single removal is the strongest reason to consider the upgrade.

Image generation: surprisingly good for $0

Linky's image gen is the second surprise of the review. Free, uncapped, and meaningfully better than what Stable Diffusion 1.5 community forks were shipping in mid-2024. A notch below Candy's character-locked pipeline - we'll get to where the gap shows.

Anime styles land cleanest: tidy lines, consistent eyes, correct hand counts most of the time. Realistic-style personas come out fine but with the usual model tells - slightly waxy skin texture, occasional eye asymmetry, a chin that doesn't quite match across two generations. Generation speed clocked ~18 seconds on free, ~9 seconds on Linky+ (we timed both across 10 prompts each).

The gap vs Candy: character consistency drifts. We generated 20 selfies of Aiko across the run - same persona, same outfit prompt. Hair length shifted twice. A small freckle pattern on the left cheek appeared in generations 1, 4, 9, vanished in 2, 3, 11, returned in 17. Outfit details mutated whenever we changed the scene prompt. Candy's pipeline holds that. For $0 you can't really complain - but if you're using image gen to build a roleplay where the character looks the same on day 8 as day 1, this is the part you'll feel.

NSFW policy and privacy

Linky's adult-content policy is the soft middle. Suggestive everything - lingerie, swimwear, flirty banter, fade-to-black bedroom scenes - passes fine. Explicit text and explicit image generation are blocked at the model layer, not at the input filter. We confirmed this on day 6: we re-tried the same explicit prompt with three different jailbreak phrasings sourced from r/AICompanions. All three came back with soft deflections. If hard NSFW is the use case, this is the wrong app - Candy Plus or Muah are where to look.

On safety: Linky enforces 18+ age-gating at signup. Messages are encrypted in transit. The independent team is meaningfully less transparent than Apperry (the maker of Anima): no published privacy whitepaper, no named legal entity on the website footer, training-data policy ambiguous in the terms of service. If you're sharing genuinely sensitive personal information (financial details, medical specifics, anything you wouldn't want a future-model-training dataset to ingest), use Anima or Candy for that. Use Linky for the texture.

What it costs (and why most users never pay)

The whole pricing story is that the free tier is the product. The Linky+ tiers exist to remove the banner and stretch the memory window - both real annoyances, neither one a deal-breaker for a casual user. If you do upgrade, $3.33/mo on the annual is the cheapest ad-removal subscription we paid for in 2026. Who Linky is for (and who she isn't)

Start here if you've never used a companion app and want to see whether you actually like talking to an AI before spending anything; you don't want another subscription on your statement; soft NSFW (lingerie, fade-to-black) is your ceiling; or you'd rather chat across many personas than build a deep bond with one. This is also our default recommendation for anyone under 25 who's curious about the category - the format is testable, the cost is zero, the off-ramp is closing the app.
