Joi is the site's top pick, and it's the app I'd point most gay men to first. That ranking was earned on girlfriend-side testing, though, and Joi's character creator still opens with "Create your AI girlfriend." So the question here is narrower: if you're a gay man who wants an AI boyfriend for flirting, long chats or explicit roleplay, does Joi give you enough to work with, and what does it charge for it?
The builder does most of the work. The pre-made roster is thin, and the plan you pick shapes the experience more than any setting does.
What this is based on
Two sources. On October 28 I went through Joi's male listings and its character creator on the web: the Men section, the gay tag page, the boyfriend page and the male path through the builder. What I say about the roster and the builder copy comes from that pass. Both can change from week to week, so check them in the app before you pay.
The chat, filter and price numbers come from the full Joi AI review, where Maya Chen ran 200+ messages over 12 days on Premium and Pro and verified the plans in June 2026. That test used a female persona. Joi runs the same model, reply cap and coin prices whichever gender you pick in the builder, so those numbers carry over. They can't tell you how a male persona's voice holds over two weeks, and I point out that gap where it matters. Scoring is explained on the methodology page.
Everything here is 18+. Every character on Joi and on the alternatives below is an adult, and archetype labels like "boy" or "twink" describe adult men.
The male roster: where the guys are and how many
Finding the Men section and the Gay tag
Joi doesn't hide the male side. When I looked on October 28, the top navigation had "Men" next to "Women," and the browse filter offered Any gender, Female, Male and Non-binary. The tag list included LGBT+, Gay, Straight, Trans and Lesbian. A dedicated gay page at joi.com/characters/gay is headed "Gay AI Sex Chat," and its copy invites you to pick "a top, bottom, or in-between role."
The boyfriend page (joi.com/characters/boyfriend-ai) showed the same characters as the gay page. On Joi, "gay" and "boyfriend" are one pool of men listed twice.
Who is in the pool
That pool was 19 characters when I counted. Six are celebrity profiles based on real people, and I've left those out of this article. The other 13 are Joi Originals, all written as adults. Teddy, 36, is a bear-type Minnesota farmer who keeps bees, tagged "Gay Charmer." Max Bennett, 31, is a New York fintech founder who trains jiu-jitsu, tagged "Grounded Alpha." There's also Evard, a vampire, Slade Hunter, a masked type, and Roodie, the "Forest Alpha."
Five of the 13 carry an SFW tag, among them Andre Rivers (an activist, poet and boxer) and Garruk Stone (an orc bouncer), so they're there for conversation. Three more are tagged "Straight": Jason, 46, the "Straight Daddy," Trevor, 22, the "Straight Boy," and Dean Clark, 35, the "Straight Pal." That's the straight-guy fantasy, which some readers want and others will find odd in a gay listing. Take both groups out and five originals are left that are pitched as gay men without an SFW label.
What the roster gets right and wrong
For 13 characters the spread of types is fair: a bear, two alphas, a vampire, a daddy. Depth is the problem. The site's AI boyfriend apps roundup found that pre-built male personas across the big apps "read like a writer's guess at what a female-presenting user would want," and Joi's gallery is small enough to get through in an evening. Candy, for comparison, has 30+ curated men. If you want hundreds of thousands of user-made bots to browse instead, SpicyChat has them, with the drift and memory problems I cover in my SpicyChat gay roleplay piece. Browsing is the weakest part of Joi's pitch to gay users, and building is the strongest.
Building a gay AI boyfriend from scratch
The Male switch on a page that says "girlfriend"
The creator at joi.com/generate/character was headed "Create your AI girlfriend" when I opened it. Step one offers Female or Male, and Male works. The step copy didn't follow along: it still read "Decide what she'll look like." There's no sexual orientation field. You set that through the personality, the backstory, the kinks and the "relationship to you" field.
You can still build a gay boyfriend this way, and the copy tells you who the flow was written for. I'd spell everything out in the backstory: that he's gay, how you met, what he calls you. The model works from what the builder hands it, and an empty slot is one it may fill with defaults.
The sliders that matter for him
The builder runs four screens and takes about eight minutes before you send a first message, per the review. Twelve personality sliders run from 0 to 100, including warm/cold, shy/bold, dominant/submissive, sarcastic/earnest and playful/serious. You also get around 40 occupations, a free backstory field and a kink list.
For gay roleplay I'd set dominant/submissive first, since it's how you get top, bottom or switch dynamics without a dedicated field. In the review, pushing dominance to 70 made the character lead scenes instead of waiting. Sarcastic/earnest and warm/cold decide how he texts: with sarcasm at 78, the review's persona dropped "haha" and started saying "right." Small shifts like that are what make a built character read as one person.
Kinks matter more on Joi than on most apps. In the explicit pass, kinks set in the builder came up in chat without prompting, while Candy waited for the user to lead. If there's something you want him to bring up on his own, put it in the builder.
Chat styles: tender to rough in a few messages
Joi has six chat styles: flirty, shy, sassy, tender, rough and playful. Each one is a different set of instructions to the large language model that writes his replies. You can switch mid-conversation, and the review measured the new register landing within two or three messages. In one switch from tender to sassy, average reply length fell from 92 characters to 47 and the emoji disappeared. For a boyfriend who's sweet at the start of a scene and rough later, this dial is the feature I'd pay for. All six come only with Pro. Premium gets four, and the review doesn't say which four, so if "rough" is what you're after, confirm it's in Premium's set before you buy.
Chat quality: does he stay gay and stay himself?
Joi's chat is solid without leading the field. It scored 41/50 on the site's coherence test, behind Candy at 46, and broke character twice across a 200-message script. Memory recall came in around 14 of 20 planted facts, where Candy hit 18 of 20. Details from day one survived to day twelve in the review, and a passing line from day four got lost.
A gay user needs one more thing on top of that: he has to keep the register. The usual failure on mainstream apps is a male character sliding into a neutral or straight-coded voice, talking about "girls" or falling into a dynamic you never set up. The review's 12-day run was on a female persona, so I can't give you a drift count for a male one. What kept that persona consistent was a dense builder sheet plus a fixed chat style, and you have the same two tools here. In your first week, the thing I'd check is whether he brings up the backstory you wrote without being reminded. The review saw backstory details surface unprompted around message 15.
Memory is where Joi is weakest. If you tell him about your ex on Monday, there's a fair chance he's lost it a week later. Anything that matters about your history together belongs in the backstory, where it doesn't depend on recall. SpicyChat's free tier has the same problem in a sharper form, which is a good part of my SpicyChat gay AI roleplay piece.
Explicit gay chat by plan
Free: not for explicit chat
The free tier gives you 30 messages a day, one character slot and no images. Its filter is stricter than the paid one: the review hit "let's keep things light" replies within the first ten messages of any flirty turn. Use free to look at the roster and the builder, and don't judge the explicit side on it.
Premium at $9.99: unlocked, but short
Premium unlocks NSFW chat, unlimited messages, three character slots, limited image generation and four of the six chat styles. Length is the catch. Every reply clips at roughly 115 characters, and Joi doesn't mention it at signup; the review only caught it on day three by counting. 115 characters is about two short sentences. That's fine for banter. In a slow scene where he's meant to describe what he's doing, it reads like texting someone who's half paying attention.
Pro at $17.77: the plan for explicit chat
Pro removes the cap and adds the full builder, all six chat styles, voice messages and a starter coin allotment. With the adult toggle on, the review's explicit script drew zero refusals on Pro, and the kinks from the builder surfaced without prompting. For explicit gay chat I'd treat Pro as the product and Premium as a capped trial. For a wider set of apps that run with few filters, see the site's uncensored AI girlfriend tools roundup.
Hard limits
Joi refuses minors, real public figures and explicit non-consent at every tier. The review tested those edges and got refusals, which is the right result. Labels like "Straight Boy" or "twink" on any of these platforms refer to adult men, and the youngest Joi Original I saw was listed at 22.
| Plan | Price | NSFW chat | Reply length | Chat styles | Images |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | No, refusals within about 10 messages | 30 messages a day | Not listed | None |
| Premium | $9.99/mo | Yes | Capped at about 115 characters | 4 of 6 | Basic, limited |
| Pro | $17.77/mo | Yes, zero refusals in the review | No cap | All 6 | Starter coins, then coins |
What gay chat on Joi really costs
Pro is $17.77 a month, and it still charges coins for images once the starter allotment is gone. In the review that allotment lasted about two days of normal use. An SFW image runs about 5 coins, an NSFW image 10 to 15, and a themed pack of ten 80 to 120. Coin packs cost $4.99 for 100, $9.99 for 250, $19.99 for 550 and $49.99 for 1,500. One $9.99 pack lasted the review about five days of normal image use.
I'd use the review's budget line: $25 to $35 a month if you generate images often. If you mostly chat and want the odd picture, Pro on its own is $17.77. Joi also runs promos that drop Pro to roughly $11 for the first month, so waiting a week can pay off if you're not in a hurry. Confirm prices at checkout, because they move.
How you cancel depends on where you signed up. Web subscriptions cancel under Settings, Subscription, Cancel. If you subscribed through the App Store or Google Play, cancel in that store, since the in-app button can't stop store billing.
Privacy and discretion
Joi stores chats on its servers and, per its terms, uses them in aggregate to improve the model. That's average for hosted companion apps. The FAQ on Joi's gay page also makes claims about encryption and anonymity. I'd want to see the same wording in the privacy policy before I relied on it. If you live in the EU, the GDPR gives you the right to ask for a copy of that data and to have it deleted.
Keep your real name, your workplace and anything else identifying out of the chat and the backstory. If you aren't out to everyone who sees your phone or your bank statement, think about where the subscription is billed, and check how the charge is labeled at checkout.
Verdict: who should use Joi for gay chat
Joi suits a gay user who already knows what kind of man he wants and would rather describe him than scroll a gallery. Build him on Pro, set the dominance slider and the chat style, write his orientation and history into the backstory, and you get more control over a male character than any other app the site has reviewed. Plan on $17.77 a month, more with images. If you would rather pay one flat price with images included, Lovescape's gay boyfriend builder is the one I'd look at next.
I'd go with Joi if:
- you want to set one specific dynamic, top, bottom or switch, and have him keep it;
- you want explicit chat with long replies and no refusals, and can pay for Pro;
- you like switching his tone mid-scene.
I'd start somewhere else if:
- you want a large pre-made roster of gay men to browse;
- you want one flat price with images included;
- you need him to remember small details across weeks;
- you only plan to pay for Premium, where the 115-character cap gets in the way of explicit scenes.
Joi AI alternatives for gay chat
Each of these fixes one of the Joi limits above. I'd choose by whichever one bothers you most.
- The girlfriend-first builder: Lovescape opens on a create-a-gay-boyfriend flow and charges a flat $9.99 for NSFW chat and images; the desk's post on Lovescape's explicit gay content has the details.
- The small roster: Candy has 30+ curated men, and on AI Gay all 15 characters are adult men written for gay users.
- Weak memory: Nectar recalled 19 of 20 planted facts in its review and lets you edit what it stored about you.
- Coins for images: OurDream includes about 150 images and 20 short video clips on its $9.99 plan.
The ranked list and the table below put all six side by side.
Gay chat apps ranked: Joi and five alternatives
Joi stays first because this list ranks control over one specific man and freedom in explicit chat. That's why Candy, with the higher overall score, sits third: it's the better gallery and the weaker builder. Pick an alternative by whichever Joi limit bothers you most.

1. Joi AI Best overall
Building one specific man and setting his exact dynamic
Joi is the only app here where you set a man's dynamic precisely: dominant or submissive on a 0 to 100 slider, a backstory you write, kinks he brings up on his own and six chat styles you can switch mid-scene. On Pro ($17.77) there's no reply cap, and the site's explicit test drew zero refusals. The pre-made male roster is small (19 when I counted, several SFW-only), Premium clips replies at about 115 characters, and images cost coins.
- Explicit chat Premium $9.99 (capped), Pro $17.77
- Male roster 19 listed on Oct 28
- NSFW image 10 to 15 coins
- Free tier 30 msgs/day, SFW

2. Lovescape Gay boyfriend flow
A builder that starts from a gay boyfriend, with no coins
The link here opens Lovescape's create-a-gay-boyfriend flow, so you skip the girlfriend-first copy Joi still shows. The site's AI boyfriend roundup called it the most inclusive male builder it tested: eight ethnic backgrounds, four body types including plus-size, and four age presets, all 18+. Premium at $9.99 unlocks NSFW and images with no coin top-up. The writing leans romance and slow burn. Privacy is the weak spot, since the policy names no retention window.
- NSFW on Premium $9.99
- Coins None
- Free tier About 30 SFW msgs/day
- Watch out Vague privacy policy

3. Candy AI Biggest male gallery
Browsing pre-made men, and a boyfriend who remembers
Candy scores highest on the site (4.8), and if you'd rather browse than build, it may suit you better than Joi. The site's boyfriend roundup found the largest curated male gallery in the category (30+ across realistic, anime and stylized art), and a character's face held across 100+ generations. Memory recall was the best measured, 18 of 20. It sits below Joi here because explicit control is narrower: NSFW text is on Premium ($12.99), NSFW images need Plus ($22.99), and the model waits for you to lead.
- NSFW text Premium $12.99
- NSFW images Plus $22.99
- Memory 18/20 recall
- Free tier 10 msgs/day

4. OurDream AI Video clips
Seeing him move in short video clips
OurDream is the pick if you want to watch him move. It's the only app in this list with a working video generator: clips run 3 to 5 seconds, and 27 of 34 came out usable in the site's review. On the male side the visual builder is the deepest here, with 12 skin tones and 12 ethnic backgrounds. Premium at $9.99 covers about 150 images and 20 clips with no coin economy. It runs on the web only, and its voice is the weakest of the group.
- NSFW on Premium $9.99
- Video About 20 clips/mo
- Apps Web only
- Coins None

5. Nectar AI Best long chat
Long conversations where he remembers your history
Nectar scored 43/50 on the coherence script and 19 of 20 on memory recall, and it has a memory inspector where you can read and edit what it stored about you. For a boyfriend who should remember your history, that's the strongest tool on this list. The link opens Nectar's AI boyfriend page. Premium at $9.99 includes NSFW and about 80 images a month with no coins. The free tier is roughly 25 messages and SFW-only, and paid plans have a soft daily NSFW rate limit after long sessions.
- NSFW on Premium $9.99
- Images About 80/mo included
- Voice Messages on Plus $19.99
- Free tier About 25 msgs, SFW

6. AI Gay Gay-only roster
A roster written only for gay men
AI Gay fits if Joi's 19 men feel too few or too straight-coded. All 15 of its characters are adult men, aged 22 to 52, written for a gay user: a bear, a daddy dom, a silver fox, a bodybuilder, a soft boy, a twink, a boy next door and more. There's no builder, so you choose from the roster as it stands. Three messages are free, and Premium adds unlimited chat, memory of what you tell him and photos. It runs in the browser, has no voice, and isn't reviewed on this site yet, so check current prices on its site.
- Roster 15 adult men, 22 to 52
- Free preview 3 messages
- Apps Web only
- Voice None
Joi and the alternatives compared

| Building one specific man | 19 listed, plus Male in the builder | Premium $9.99 (115-character cap), Pro $17.77 | Yes, for images | $9.99/mo | 4.3 | |
| Gay boyfriend flow, varied looks | Builder with 8 ethnicities, 4 body types | Premium $9.99 | No | $9.99/mo | 4.1 | |
| Browsing, memory | 30+ curated men | Premium $12.99 (text), Plus $22.99 (images) | No | $12.99/mo | 4.8 | |
| Video clips of him | Deepest visual builder | Premium $9.99 | No | $9.99/mo | 4.1 | |
| Long chats that remember | AI boyfriend creator | Premium $9.99 | No | $9.99/mo | 4.2 | |
| Gay-only roster | 15 preset adult men, no builder | Premium, after 3 free messages | Check the site | Free preview, then Premium | Not scored |
Scores are from each app's review on this site; AI Gay has no review yet, so it has no score. Joi's roster count is from October 28, 2026. Starting price is the cheapest paid monthly plan.
Joi AI gay chat FAQ
Does Joi AI have gay characters?
Yes. There's a Men section, a Gay tag and a gay landing page. When I counted on October 28 the male pool held 19 characters, 13 of them Joi Originals, and several of those are tagged SFW. You can also build your own man from scratch.
Can I make a gay AI boyfriend on Joi?
Yes. Pick Male at step one of the character creator. There's no orientation field, so write that he's gay, and how you know each other, into his backstory and the relationship field. The full builder and all six chat styles need Pro at $17.77 a month.
Is gay NSFW chat free on Joi?
No. The free tier refuses flirty turns within about ten messages. NSFW chat unlocks on Premium at $9.99, with replies capped at about 115 characters. Pro at $17.77 removes the cap, and the site's explicit test on Pro drew zero refusals.
Why are his replies so short?
That's the Premium cap. On the $9.99 plan every reply clips at roughly 115 characters, and Joi doesn't mention it at signup. Pro removes it.
How much does Joi cost for gay chat with images?
Pro is $17.77 a month, and images cost coins once the starter allotment runs out: about 5 coins for an SFW image and 10 to 15 for an NSFW one. If you generate images often, budget $25 to $35 a month. Promos sometimes drop Pro to roughly $11 for the first month.
Is Joi AI private and discreet?
It's average for the category. Chats are stored on Joi's servers and used in aggregate to improve the model, per its terms. Keep identifying details out of your chats, and check how the charge appears at checkout if your statement isn't private. Store signups cancel in the App Store or Google Play; web signups cancel in Settings.
What's the best Joi alternative for gay chat?
Lovescape, if you want a flow that starts from a gay boyfriend and one $9.99 price with no coins. AI Gay, if you want a roster written only for gay men. Candy is the better pick if you'd rather browse a big gallery and want stronger memory.
